Ahhh, July...
...good old summertime...

...the smell of flowers, the whizzing of hummingbirds...
...warm days, late sunsets, sounds of croaking frogs and noisy locust...

Ruidoso trip...
...This trip was bittersweet...
...always enjoy being home in the mountains but we went specifically to talk to our real estate agent to put the cabin on the market to sell...ugly cry...
...We even left for home a day early b/c I was an emotional wreck planning things for us to do while we were there...
...I am not saying we didn't have a good time...we did...it was just different!...
...and we didn't have either or both girls with us...
~
...I love the rain showers in the mountains which we had daily...it just enhances the smell of the pine..
...Oh, the pines of Ruidoso...my favorite part!
~
~
...many feed grain mills along the way...

~~

...agriculture farming is a big part of the panhandle of Texas...
...wheat, corn, some cotton, etc...
...smells like stinky poo to me...
...these are the 'cattle feed lots' that you smell...

...many trains running parallel to our highway...
~~
...After Portales, there is a long stretch of driving and we are always looking forward to seeing Roswell, NM, meaning we have the last 70 miles of our trip left, and it is the prettiest part of our 10 hour+ drive...

~~
...the UFO stories has brought much attention to Roswell...
...In July 1947, something happened during a severe thunderstorm...
...Was it a flying saucer?...
...Was it a weather balloon?...
...FYI: I've never really had an interest in UFO's or aliens...
..but, I did see this mural on the side of a business and thought it was cool...
Roswell has certainly grown as a city since I've been going to Ruidoso since the late 1960's...
....and it is a nice city...
...leaving Roswell...
...making the curve to start the downgrade to the valley...
...eventually, back up...

...entering the Ruidoso Downs area...
...the racetrack has been Ruidoso's premier attraction since the 1940's...
...the showcase All American Futurity, which is held every Labor Day, carries a record purse of $3 million....by comparison, the Kentucky Derby carries a $2 million purse...
...I am proud to say that our Thymus Jet ran in the All American in 1972 with the purse being a whomping $1 million...
...in the past few years the track added the Billy the Kid Casino...
~~
...three guests greeting us at the cabin...
~~
...rainstorm moving in w/ the sunset on our first night in the village...
~~
...one of the best steakhouses , not only in Ruidoso, but anywhere...

...changes to Mountain time...

...Next major towns will be Clovis, NM and then Portales, NM......After Portales, there is a long stretch of driving and we are always looking forward to seeing Roswell, NM, meaning we have the last 70 miles of our trip left, and it is the prettiest part of our 10 hour+ drive...
...New Mexico Military Institute...known as the West Point of the West...
...It remains as the only state-supported co-ed preparatory high school and junior college in the United States...
...We have had 3 of our own from Bristow, Oklahoma to attend this school...

...Happy 4th from Mexico...
~~
...The Inn of the Mountain God's Resort has the largest fireworks display in New Mexico...
...We have attended their display on two different occasions and planned to go this year...
...Welp, we went and drove on through...we got a late start and got there at 6:30. We would have had a 2 mile walk...and then getting out afterwards would have been a crazy mess...
...We thought about driving around to the back side of the resort which we just found on this past trip, but I chose not to sit out in the woods after dark just to watch fireworks...
...(back view)...
...I am sure we missed an awesome show...we missed the view of the fireworks but we could still hear them from the cabin....
...cozy living level of our cabin...
~~
...view of the Rio Ruidoso from the outside deck of the Sacred Grounds Coffee House...
~~
...one of my favorite adobe homes at the Rainmakers Golf Community...
~~
...views from the south towards the north...
~~~
...On our trip home, we thought about going through the Palo Duro Canyon Park in Canyon, TX...
...but, a friend who went to West Texas A&M University told us it was not a good idea during this season b/c it was so hot and had lots of rattlesnakes.... the heat would not bother me but RATTLESNAKES..!!!
...Bradley Chance Hayes...
...(our friend... freelance professional artist, and ropin' cowboy)...
~
...My real plan was to visit a long ago friend in Albuquerque but she recently had back surgery...
...So, we decided at Roswell, we would take a new route home through Tucumcari...
... if we do that again, we will leave north out of Ruidoso, instead of going through Roswell...
...it added about 3 hours to our trip home...
...it took us miles on a two lane road w/out any shoulders...
..we didn't need shoulders b/c we didn't see any vehicles...
~~
...across the wide open spaces of north eastern NM, you will see pronghorn antelope...
...we saw several herds throughout the drive...
~~
...we did make a few stops...one was the Billy the Kid grave @ Ft. Sumner...
...the one good thing about our stop here was that Paul found a lady's wallet, which had been run over, with everything important in it...her broken phone, DL, her social security card, her Indian ID card, etc.....I found her name on the whitepages which gave some names of relatives...from there, I found her daughter's name and looked her up on fb...was able to I-message and made contact....we got a correct address...put the wallet in the mail when we got home....to say the least, they were very thankful...
~~
...it's hard to imagine seeing these ranches out in the middle of nowhere w/ windmills here and there...
...just miles and miles of what you see in these pics w/ a few cows scattered about...
...this ranch went on for probably 50 miles w/ a gate like this about every 3-5 miles apart....
~~~
...Again, Ruidoso is place that will always have a part of my heart...
w/ lots of memories made there from the time I was a teenager with my parents and siblings going to Ruidoso Downs...
...to taking my own girls w/ their dad skiing and spending fall break, Christmas break and a week or two in the summers...
...Introducing Paul to Ruidoso and the trips we have made w/ my girls and the bunny taking her first steps there...just hoping now to take at least one more trip w/ our lil' June bugs....
~~~
Camera Roll...
...it's NOT open yet...
...So, we went to the Bristow City Pool...
...and enjoyed...!
~~~
...dinner @ the Beach House...
...while we were there, the bunny had a nice visit w/ my friend, Kaye...
~~
...This next week she is attending a Princess Camp...
...she is somewhat hesitant because it will be out of her comfort zone from daycare...
~
...she has the same tongue rolling trait like her yaya...
~

Flip flop tans and sugary white sand...

...the SunDestin Beach Resort...
~~
...sinking toes in the wet sand...
...lol...we rented umbrella seats for 3 days but spent most of our time by the poolside...
...the bunny was not too fond of the sand...
~~
...since we flew in and ubered our way around, we would walk across the street for breakfast...
...on this morning, it was Chick Fil A...
~...splash pad fun.
...the first of many friends the bunny made...
~~
...so, the bunny fed the alligators and had a pic made w/ Momma and Nonni holding one w/ the bunny in the pic...but, you can't even see a blonde curl b/c she was hiding behind her momma.
~~~
...ghost crabbing...
...Poppi got the bunny a headlight that she was so proud to use to hunt for these ghost crabs...
...we found three and she let one crawl up her arm...
...she let them go so they could go back to their families....
...of course, the bunny came home w/ her own caterpillars and net house....
