Easter SUNDAY...Church...

EASTER brings different thoughts and holds different meanings to different people.  For many people, Easter is all about an Easter basket filled with a chocolate bunny, marshmellow peeps, or cadbury eggs.

BUT to many, Easter Sunday is the day we celebrate the resurrection of Christ after the crucifixion.  As a young girl attending the Nazarene Church where my grandfather had been a minister, I remember singing age-old Easter hymns about the cross and the resurrection.

"The Old Rugged Cross",  "He Lives",  "At the Cross",  and "I Love to Tell the Story" would be a few of my favorites.

New Mexico churches...
...A big part of New Mexico is seen through the rich layers of culture that evolved its historic churches.  All over New Mexico one can find churches from massive mission churches to smaller wood frame or adobe churches.  All along the backroads and highways are roadside chapels, some perched at the edge of a canyon or tucked off the road on a tiny community plaza....or you can find the more exquisite decorated cathedrals that are visited frequently by NM tourist.  Some are so historically and architecturally  fascinating we've devoted some of our travel time for touring these churches.

St. Annes Episcopal Chapel....roadside church by Eagle Creek...19 miles east of Ruidoso on Hwy 70...

...other small churches along Hwy. 70 between Ruidoso and Roswell...

Saint Joseph Catholic Church...a fascinating historic church built to serve the people of the Mescalero Apache Reservation....curently undergoing preservation and restoration.

St. Francis de Paula Mission church was established in 1869 in Tulsarosa, NM...

Santa Fe, NM....
San Miguel Chapel is a Spanish colonial mission church in Santa Fe.  It is the oldest church in the United States being built in the early 1600's.  Sunday mass is still held @ the chapel.

Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878 and stands at the end of the Old Santa Fe Trail.  It is known for its miraculous staircase.  The chapel makes a perfect setting for weddings and is now a private museum.

The St. Francis Cathedral  in Old Town Santa Fe.  The stained glass windows were created in France, then transported to Santa Fe vis ship and covered wagon.  It took more than 15 years to complete.

First Baptist Church, Santa Fe...

First Presbyterian Church, Santa Fe...

El Santuario de Chimayo is a small adobe church located about 30 minutes north of Santa Fe in the tranquil foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains on the High Road to Taos.  It was built between 1814-1816.  For generations Native Americans, Hispanics of the SouthWest, along with others, have traveled here for healing.
